Due to excessive energy consumption, 8K TVs from Samsung and LG may be banned in Europe

On October 19, according to BusinessKorea, the European Union has decided to implement stricter energy efficiency requirements for TV products from March 1 next year. For example, Micro LEDs and 8K TVs must have an energy efficiency index of 0.9 or below. However, at present, the energy efficiency index of Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics such products exceeds 0.9.

So far, these requirements have applied to products such as 4K TVs. Some companies have disputed the EU’s stricter rules, but they have not been accepted.

To reduce the energy efficiency index to 0.9 or lower, a 75-inch 8K TV needs a display that consumes 141 watts or less per hour. The 75-inch 8K TVs released by Samsung Electronics this year consume at least 303 watts per hour, compared to 219 watts for LG Electronics’ counterparts. The energy consumption of Micro LED TVs is much greater than that of 8K TVs.

Europe is where high-end TV products are sold in large quantities, with total 8K TV shipments estimated at 400,000 units this year, of which 30% are expected to be sold in Europe. This means that both Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics could be hit by stricter regulations. (Proofreader/Wu Shouzhe)
